Boullier: Red Bull and Ferrari will be our main rivals

Lotus Renault GP’s 2011 challenger, the R31, caused quite a stir when it was launched with an innovative exhaust design, which they are now hoping will help improve on their 2010 fifth place finish in the constructors’ championship. An innovation which team boss, Eric Boullier says was a “risk” but one which he feels will pay off. Speaking to El Pais Boullier said: "We spent a lot of time thinking about it and discussing it, as it was a risk. But in the end we said Why not?” Boullier continued saying: “It's too early to say if we can win races; it will be hard to be there with Red Bull and Ferrari. But they will be our main rivals." Boullier also pointed out that Renault is already quicker than the upgraded Mercedes GP car and McLaren’s MP4-26, as McLaren have continued to struggle to get the best from their 2011 car so far. Although, he did admit the challenge would still be there. "I very much respect Ross Brawn, Mercedes and McLaren and I know they have greater resources," he said. "If we can stay ahead of them it will be a great success for us."
