Lotus lose support in name row

Tony Fernandes’s ‘Team Lotus’ has apparently lost the support of the name's previous owner David Hunt. The Telegraph reports that Hunt, who sold the 'Team Lotus' name to Fernandes is now preparing to sue the Malaysian team boss, alleging that Fernandes has yet to pay for the name. The court battle with Group Lotus is set to resume today, but The Telegraph says that Hunt is "refusing to assist Team Lotus in court", and sees "potentially some serious holes" in Fernandes' case. "He's apparently changed his mind at the eleventh hour," Hunt said. "He's trying to renegotiate by offering new terms which are, frankly, ludicrous." Fernandes bought the name to Team Lotus when relations with Proton deteriorated, having previously had the backing of Group Lotus. Then when Proton bought into the Renault F1 team late last year, the company wanted the Lotus name back in order to call the Renault team, Lotus-Renault GP. The complexities of the court case mean a final decision could take some time to reach.
