McLaren to feature innovative exhaust?
After Lotus Renault GP's new innovative exhaust system became the talk of the paddock in Valencia as pre-season testing got underway on Tuesday, it has emerged that McLaren's 2011 car may also feature this innovative new exhaust system. On the Lotus Renault GP the new design sees the exhaust exit at the bottom of the sidepod area, which is aimed at generating more downforce through the flow of air to the now mandatory single diffuser. And, according to Auto Motor und Sport McLaren's 2011 championship challenger will have a similar design. "The MP4-26 apparently has the same trick," said the German report. Meanwhile, Lotus Renault GP team boss Eric Boullier told ESPNF1 that he wasn't going to talk too much about it, instead he said: "I will let our competitors find out by themselves," adding "Yes, we have decided to go a little bit brave in this design and this area to make the car a bit different. If you are too conservative you will stay at the back of the queue and we do not want to spend our time copying the others. If you want to be at the front you have to be creative and you also need to bring this creativeness in the team spirit." This innovative new design has already caught the eye of some of the other teams, including Mercedes GP, with team boss Ross Brawn saying "Renault's thinking is in the right direction. We are working on a similar solution." However, we will have to wait until Friday to find out if McLaren have gone down the same route as Renault, when the Woking based team will launch the McLaren MP4-26 in Berlin. Image ©Andrew Hone
