Perez Surprises at 3rd day of Tests

Sauber's young Mexican driver, Sergio Perez has finished top of the time sheet, at the third day of tests in Barcelona. Perez's fastest time of 1m 21.761s was even quicker than that set by current World Champion Sebastian Vettel on Wednesday. Although, the Sauber driver's quickest time was achieved on a low-fuel qualifying style run. However, the Sauber team didn't have a issue free day, as the team were hit with a KERS problem. Plus, Perez also caused a late red flag when he was forced to stop at the pit exit. Ferrari's Felipe Massa was second fastest, and only 0.331 seconds off Perez's pace. Massa as like Perez produced his best time on a single lap run. Ferrari again achieved impressive mileage, with the Brazilian driver crossing the start/finish line 127 times over the course of the day. Red Bull's Mark Webber was third fastest, with the Williams of Rubens Barrichello behind in fourth. Barrichello caused two red flags over the course of the day, after stopping out on track twice. Even so, the Williams driver still completed an impressive 105 laps. Mercedes GP, spent the majority of the day running heavier fuel loads in order to get a better understanding of their new exhaust design, before adding the remaining upgrades for the second half of the last winter test. Although, Michael Schumacher did produce his best time on a single lap run. Sauber were not the only team to suffer problems with their KERS system, as it was a similar story over at the Lotus Renault GP garage. This issue limited Vitaly Petrov's running in the morning session, although he did complete 24 laps and produced the eighth fastest time before Nick Heidfeld took over for the afternoon session. Heidfeld was sixth fastest on the day. Lotus split its day between its two race drivers, although, unfortunately Jarno Trulli only managed to complete six laps before a gearbox change was required, and then a water leak prevented any further running. A slight water leak remained for the afternoon session as the replacement radiator had been damaged in transit. Kovalainen completed 39 laps and finished seventh. Force India and Toro Rosso spent the day focusing on mileage and longer runs. Toro Rosso also worked on their pit stops.
