Vettel ends first day of tests on top

Current world champion Sebastian Vettel has ended the opening day of testing at Valencia with the fastest lap time of 1m 13.769s. The Red Bull driver began the day by unveiling the teams new RB7 to the media alongside team mate Mark Webber before testing got underway. Speaking about his first testing experience in the new RB7, Vettel said: “It was good today and I felt comfortable in the car, I enjoyed it. It was day one for most of us and there’s a long way to go with testing ahead of the season and a very long racing season after that – with 20 races – so things can change! We’ve only made the first step today, but we had a reliable day and can be very proud of what we have achieved so far." Meanwhile, Red Bull's head of race engineering, Ian Morgan added: “We had a very good shakedown with the RB7 today and completed everything we aimed to on day one. It’s an encouraging start to what we hope will be a successful season for the RB7.” Local favourite with the home crowd at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, Fernando Alonso, had set the pace in the morning session, with Vettel finishing just behind. However, Alonso ended the day nearly a second off Vettel's time and fifth fastest. Both sessions were dry throughout. Plus, the morning cloud cover disappeared for the afternoon session, giving the teams a track temperature closer to the kind of temperatures that the Pirelli tyres will experience at races. With the recent rule changes for the 2011 season, which sees the re-introduction of the KERS system, the ban on the double diffuser and the new movable rear wing, their has been a lot of questions about how the new devices would work. Mercedes GP's Nico Rosberg was one driver to try out the new adjustable rear wing, although only manages 9 laps after suffering a hydraulics leak early in the morning session. Speaking about the new wing, Rosberg said: "I tried the rear wing and that is going to take some getting used to. I pushed the button, the thing goes down on the track and you suddenly feel the car go lighter. Then you release the button again before braking and you think 'jeez this thing hasn't actually gone back to its original position'. So yes, it's going to take some time to get used to I think."
